Telehealth using 3D virtual environments in stroke rehabilitation – work in progress
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have now started testing a telehealth system for stroke rehabilitation in a rural area in Sweden (NUHospital Group Area). For collection of assessments and audiovisual communication, the telehealth system has bidirectional contact with the home-based units. To date, three stroke subjects’ participated; they were instructed to play 3D computer games with the hemiplegic upper extremity. The intervention led to clinical changes for all subjects. The analysis of the audiovisual communication revealed that the both stroke subjects and therapists were not yet effective in regulating their turn taking process. The data suggests the feasibility of a distance based approach using 3D virtual environments for upper extremity rehabilitation after stroke.

Rehabilitation after Stroke using Immersive User Interfaces in 3D Virtual and Augmented Gaming Environments
Stroke is one of most common diseases of our modern societies with high socio-economic impact. Hence, rehabilitation approach involving patients in their rehabilitation process while lowering costly involvement of specialised human personnel is needed. This article describes a novel approach, offering an integrated rehabilitation training for stroke patients using a serious gaming approach base...
متن کاملA Comparative Analysis of 2D and 3D Tasks for Virtual Reality Therapies Based on Robotic-Assisted Neurorehabilitation for Post-stroke Patients
Post-stroke neurorehabilitation based on virtual therapies are performed completing repetitive exercises shown in visual electronic devices, whose content represents imaginary or daily life tasks. Currently, there are two ways of visualization of these task. 3D virtual environments are used to get a three dimensional space that represents the real world with a high level of detail, whose realis...
متن کاملHuman-Computer Interaction Issues in Brain- Computer Interface and Virtual Reality
Recently, there has been increasing interest in using BCI in 3D virtual environments. There are several reasons for using a brain-computer interface in virtual reality (VR); some of these are the same reasons for using VR in general: rehearsal of scenarios that are too dangerous in the real world (e.g., controlling a wheelchair); prototyping devices (e.g., robotic hand); prototyping new control...
متن کاملVirtual reality and stroke rehabilitation: a tangible interface to an every day task
At the University of Nottingham, UK, a project is currently in progress which is exploring the application of virtual environments for supporting stroke rehabilitation. The project has focussed on a user centred design approach and has involved consultation with stroke survivors, therapists and stroke researchers. Seminars held during the initial phase of the project offered an insight into the...
متن کاملValidity of a virtual environment for stroke rehabilitation.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Virtual environments for use in stroke rehabilitation are in development, but there has been little evaluation of their suitability for this purpose. We evaluated a virtual environment developed for the rehabilitation of the task of making a hot drink. METHODS Fifty stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation in a UK hospital stroke unit were involved. The performance of ...
